"As a quarter to midnight 14,000 people applauded & cheered their loudest when Old Glory's Big Man was declared "Champion" for 1950.

The enthusiastic good will of the crowd must have given the owners, Mr. & Mrs. J.T. Budd Jr. & rider Carl Edwards a keen pleasure as the glory of winning the Celebration Grand Championship.

They commenced to yell & applaud when the 16.1 hand, chestnut stallion turned in the gate with his nodding head & giant stride. As he passed, many people in the boxes stood & clapped. When he was stripped & the judge came to examine him, there was no doubt of the popular choice.

But Merry Midnight brought forth a lot of cheering too. Indeed, as far as the audience was concerned, the contest was between these two. They were taking the battle where they left off last Sept. & the crowd had eyes for them.

Old Glory's Big Man's gaits were hard to fault, and his flat walk with it's long stride & swinging head set them all wild. Here was a true nodding walking horse in the grand manor."
