Delite's Harbor Lite

By Sharon Johnson
Delight's Harbor Lite has an excellent disposition, and is easy to work
with from the ground, yet has a competitive spirit in the ring according
to her owner Joann Mayberry. Ms. Mayberry and her beautiful black mare
were recently named Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' & Exhibitors'
Association Adult Versatility Program Supreme Champions.
Ms. Mayberry, of Gig Harbor, Washington, emphatically states that "Life
has accomplished in one season what I had planned for her to accomplish in
two or three years. " This talented mare and the achievements she has made
in her very first year of Plantation Pleasure competition have indeed made
her owner very proud.
Delight's Harbor Lite arrived in Gig Harbor from Tennessee in 1978 as a
coming two-year-old, and was placed in the capable hands of trainer Arnie
Arnold. Most of the patrons at Arnold's Stables are pleasure horse people,
and from that point on, Lite was destined for a career as a plantation
horse!
In both her three-year-old and junior years, Lite became the Washington
State High Point Driving Horse. The mare has had several different
exhibitors and Ms. Mayberry believes that this makes her horse even more
versatile. In '81, Lite was shown by seven different people and all ended
up in the winner's circle! She was Washington State High Point Driving
Champion, Washington State High Point Model Champion, and Washington State
High Point Versatile Champion in 1981. Lite also placed in the top three
in English, Western, and E-Z Rider Championship during that year.
Lite's trainer, Arnie Arnold, has been riding Walking Horses for most of
his life, and training them for a fair portion of it also. During Lite's
initial training sessions with Arnold, English Plantation and Driving were
concentrated upon. Shortly thereafter, he put her in training for Western
Classes. Due to her rapid progress, Lite won her qualifying class and
placed third in the Championship Western Pleasure Class at the Northwest
Tennessee Walking Horse Jubilee after working Western for only three
weeks. Each new training experience for Lite has represented new plateaus
in her career. Trail work is now being included in her training program,
and Ms. Mayberry intends to compete in this category this year.
"Working with Lite in the Versatility Program has gone better than I dared
hope," says Joann Mayberry. After one outstanding year, it is certain that
many more good years lie ahead for this exciting duo.
